The original Tour Train was fabricated in 1954. The second and larger Tour Train was fabricated in 1989 and maintenance on that original towing unit/engine has kept it running for the last 36 years. But the time has come for a complete rebuild. This will entail:
- Finding a new complete towing unit including the cab, chassis, and engine with the capabilities of towing our heavy loads.
- Fabrication work to remove the shell from the current chassis, replace it with the new one, and replace the metal work.
- Connection of wiring, train whistle, and sound system
- Repaint the shell.
- Labor cost to accomplish all of this.
The cost at this time is unknown, but we are estimating between $100,000 to $200,000. No doubt labor will be a huge part of the endeavor. We are utilizing all of our local experts in the areas of mechanics, welding, fabricating, electrical, and auto body, to guide us through the process. Our goal is to begin the planning and fundraising for this project this summer so that the train can be rebuilt over the winter time and will be ready to go for the 2026 season.
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we are facing this huge undertaking and expense with the longevity of the beloved Tour Train at the forefront. We are mindful of how we serve the community, downtown businesses, and visitors to Helena, and how much they support us in return. Last Chance Tours is so very grateful to all of you and we will do everything we can to keep the Tour Train rolling through Helena! We thank you in advance for your consideration in donating to fund this upcoming project so that we can continue making memories for another 71 years.
